CONTACT is honored to present CONTACTinRESIDENCE and June’s Artist-in-Residence, Shani Peters.

About CONTACTinRESIDENCE

Each month one artist will be selected by the CONTACT staff and featured on the CONTACT Journal as an Artist-in-Residence in our virtual space. Making use of the digital platform, this artist will use the CONTACT lens to meditate on their own creative practice.

IN THE WORDS OF THE ARTIST

I am interested in collective movement, in cyclical patterns throughout history and generations, and in cultural record keeping and accessibility. My work examines histories in the focused context of present societal conditions, and re-presents them in manners consciously influenced by a hyper-mediated society. My perspective is heavily informed by my family and by the historical era in which I live. I was born into the me generation of the socially conservative 1980s by way of faithful Black Power era parents who live by a mantra of social responsibility. I research then produce work dense with appropriated material (both highly recognizable and commonly overlooked), popular reference, contradictory notions, and an eye towards realities yet unseen. I layer ideas and references through video, print, and public projects in an attempt to push back my own program- a new account, or record of existence.

ABOUT SHANI PETERS

Shani Peters is a New York based, multi-disciplinary artist focusing in video, printmaking, and public projects. She has exhibited and/or screened at the Bronx Museum of Art, Brooklyn Academy of Music, the Lower East Side Printshop, the Savannah College of Arts and Design, the Museum of Printing History, and the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture. She has completed residencies at The Center for Book Arts, LMCC’s Swing Space, the Lower Eastside Printshop and the Bronx Museum’s Artist in the Marketplace program. She completed her B.A. at Michigan State University and her M.F.A. at CCNY. Peters is currently researching and developing a new narrative video project. In the fall she will travel abroad for a six-week residency in Manchester, UK.

tasjmagazine:

IN THE WORDS OF THE ARTIST

This particular ____________ of ___________ is about thresholds and the points of contact between ____________ and those thresholds. My effort is to reach the soil of the oasis but the __________ is rippled by peril, my pace bound by ____________. Though _________ ___________ often do not work out as I might hope, the __________ nevertheless remain the same: How permeable is the fabric that divides __________ and bliss? How tentative the _____________? And where does ________ fit in with all this? If I __________ what I have set out to ____________, who’s to say it will last? There’s always ____________ and ___________ in the way of true communion, so the thrilling tension between euphoric __________ and devastating ___________ becomes the object…

ABOUT ADAM COLLIGNON

b.1980, St. Louis, MO, lives and works in Brooklyn, NY. His work consistently involves the open spirit of exploration along themes of balance, permanence, materiality and the nature of freedom. He most recently performed at The Windmill Factory with his work BLOOD VISIONS, a sculptural allegory concerning the relationship between the artist, the mystic, and Rock and Roll, and his studio VOID WAVE will be featured in the upcoming Bushwick Open Studios.

okenyo:

About CONTACTinRESIDENCE

Each month one artist will be selected by the CONTACT staff and featured on the CONTACT Journal as an Artist-in-Residence in our virtual space. Making use of the digital platform, this artist will use the CONTACT lens to meditate on their own creative practice.

IN THE WORDS OF THE ARTIST

A selection of works from two recent series. PRIESTESS is an ongoing series of site-specific installations and video performances. The videos present abstracted rituals, wherein mundane objects—such as balloons, ropes, life vests, and fishing nets—aid in the ceremonial dissolution of boundary between ego and nature. I love playing with contemporary sound to contextualize the timelessness and absurdity of these rituals. Pop music, ranging from Peggy Lee to Kelly Rowland, is manipulated, distorted, and turned into hypnotic mantra, becoming a surreal totem of ceremonial time in Sun Threshold/Fire Magic. The deeply textural sounds of water, mud, overhead planes, and distant ATV’s in Existential Marina provide a similar aural totem.

DARK SPECTRUM is comprised of large-format color photographs revealing rituals, symmetries, and hidden places. The sacred residues within an otherwise profane, secret, or forgotten place. Mischief, longing, and discovery mark the moment of arrival at these mysterious places.

For CONTACT PROJECT, selections from these two series are presented together, revealing the rhythm and common language that they share.

ABOUT MOLLIE MCKINLEY

My multimedia work encompasses video, photography, performance, film, and installation. Existential mysteries and uncanny redemption are explored through an incorporation of Nordic and Greek myths, the cinematic, existential philosophy, neo-primitivism, abstract ritual, and shamanism.

Particularly in my most recent works, I’m exploring and articulating the intersection of the mystical and the existential. Mysticism for me means the deep unknown of the cosmos interrupting and altering the human experience. My definition of existentialism encompasses an assertion of personal responsibility, of being fully present within each moment, of having complete freedom; simultaneously, acknowledging an ennui that responds to the limitations of individual consciousness. The work proposes iconoclastic methods of transcending these limitations. These opposites meet within action, within the element of the absurd, within a juxtaposition between humor and heaviness. Within an integration or interruption with site and landscape. Within re-interpretation of the contemporary totems of mundane objects and sound.

All images courtesy and copyright of Mollie McKinley.

All images courtesy and copyright of Mollie McKinley.

Mollie McKinley, Existential Marina (excerpt from 20 minute...

Mollie McKinley, Existential Marina (excerpt from 20 minute video). On view at the 2012 Brucennial through April 20; 159 Bleeker Street, NYC.

New Life, Courtesy of and copyright Jon Handel.

After a brief respite for the haze of the holidays, CONTACT is honored to present CONTACTinRESIDENCE and March’s Artist-in-Residence, Jon Handel, with his series New Life.

This series came from my fascination discovering family photo albums for sale in thrift stores. It was a strange feeling looking into their lives without permission and even stranger that the albums usually cost five dollars or less. How did these albums get to the thrift store? Were these people still alive? Do they have relatives that would want these photographs back? Over the years, I have purchased family photo albums from different countries and eras. Some photos have small pieces of information such as first names, dates and locations hand-written on their backs.

I began painting and drawing on the photos in 2011. Most times, I use bright colors and playful designs to breathe some life into them. It is my goal to keep these people in the present rather than the past.
